Patient encounters: daytime hospitalists vs. nocturnists

May 2020

How many patient encounters do hospitalists see per shift—and what number do they think is reasonable? According to data from the 2019 Today’s Hospitalist Compensation & Career Survey, hospitalists as a group see an average of just under 17 patient encounters per shift.

That number varies considerably, however, by the types of patients hospitalists treat. While daytime hospitalists report seeing just over 17 patient encounters per shift, for example, nocturnists say they see just under 13.
