In this day and age, most surprising to me is the resistance to hiring international medical graduate (IMG) physicians and foreign nurses (people of color) by many North West/Central Rural Hospitals. Xenophobia is alive and well, especially at smaller hospitals, in ID, MT,WY,ND & SD.
