Mercy Hospital Springfield is under the umbrella of the Mercy Health System, the sixth largest Catholic health care system in the country. With more than 800 beds, Mercy Hospital Springfield is a tertiary level I trauma and level I stroke center. Mercy Springfield has every major adult and child subspecialty, including pediatrics, orthopedics and rehab. Services are integrated via a system-wide EHR.
Services: Hospitalists staff the hospital 24/7 and take unassigned patients from the ED, admit for non-admitting primary care physicians, provide consult services, and take transfers from regional hospital EDs and inpatient facilities. As a group, hospitalists manage or consult on an annual average of 235 patients per day.
Schedule and coverage: Hospitalists currently work a six-on/six-off model, with opportunities to pick up additional shifts and rotate through weekends and holidays. Teams consist of two dedicated admitters, 14 day rounders and three nocturnists. Daytime rounders take call 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and are not required to be in-house for the entire shift. Hospitalists provide cross coverage, allowing nocturnists to focus on admitting patients.
Compensation: Hospitalists are paid a shift rate with differentials for days, weekends and nights. There is opportunity for additional compensation by exceeding the RVU per shift target, as well as an incentive of 10% of a physician’s annual income. Mercy provides reimbursement for $5,000 of CME, dues or licensure expenses per year.
