The state-of-the-art Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center is a 300-bed tertiary hospital owned and operated by Kaiser Permanente. In 2015, the facility became a teaching hospital and welcomed its first class of internal medicine residents. Physicians are employed by HPMG, a physician-led medical group with active involvement in care delivery, quality and innovation.

Services: Hospitalists provide inpatient coverage to all adult patients on the medicine service, consultative service to other specialties for medical issues, and comanagement support for patients on various surgical services. The department also manages a 23-bed observation/clinical decision unit with perioperative evaluation, as well as other patient care activities in the peri-hospital realm. The medical center has a closed ICU with 24/7 intensivist coverage. Specialists are readily available for support around the clock.

Schedule and coverage: Day hospitalists work a seven-on/seven-off block schedule and average 11 hours per shift. Nocturnists work a block schedule with double coverage.

Local highlights: HPMG is the state’s largest and most experienced multispecialty group. It is composed of more than 600 providers dedicated to providing the highest quality clinical care and building lifetime relationships with peers and patients within Hawaii’s richly diverse communities. With beautiful scenery, friendly people, and a host of cultural and recreational activities year round, Hawaii is an excellent place to live.
